Robinhood CEO: Listed companies should not control the legal ways of using stocks
2026-09-12 09:57:11
According to CoinMeta, the co-founder of Robinhood and CEO Vlad Tenev stated that listed companies should control the rights associated with their shares, but they should not control every legitimate way in which investors can use those shares after acquiring them. He pointed out that if a tokenized product changes the underlying rights of the shares, replaces the company's official shareholder register, or imposes new obligations on the company and its transfer agents, then the consent of the issuer is required. However, if it is merely an independent financial instrument that is supported or referenced by freely tradable shares without altering the rights and obligations of the issuer, then authorization from the issuer is not necessary. Tenev believes that the digitization of assets on the blockchain should not grant the issuer veto powers that do not exist in the offline market, and companies should not prevent new investors from participating just because they are not familiar with the relevant technology.
