According to CoinMeta, after Japan's top foreign exchange official, Jun Mitsumura, issued another warning about the weakening yen, the exchange rate of the yen against the US dollar rose by 0.4% to 156.51, reaching its strongest level since September 18. Mitsumura stated that both the Japanese Prime Minister and the Finance Minister, as well as the United States, have recently sent "very clear" signals regarding the depreciation of the yen. Previously, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga mentioned that during her meeting with US President Donald Trump last week, Trump also expressed concerns about the weakening yen. On Friday evening, Japanese Finance Minister Taro Katsuya also had a phone call with US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, during which both sides reiterated their view that the yen is undervalued and agreed to further strengthen Japan-US cooperation. Nomura foreign exchange strategists yusuke miyairi indicated that this should create sufficient concern among markets about possible actual intervention measures that the Japanese Ministry of Finance may take in the near future.
