US Senate report: 84% of Iranian sanctions wallets use USDT transactions
2026-09-28 21:06:32
According to CoinMeta, and as reported by The Wall Street Journal, a survey report by Democratic members of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence analyzed 846 cryptocurrency wallets subject to sanctions due to their involvement with Iran. It was found that 84% of these wallets used USDT for transactions either entirely or almost entirely. The report suggests that USDT has become an important payment tool for Iran to circumvent sanctions and its "shadow banking system," and criticizes Tether for failing to freeze some of the sanctioned wallets in a timely manner. The select committee has submitted the report to the U.S. Department of Justice and the Treasury Department. Tether has not responded to The Wall Street Journal's request for comment, but has previously cooperated with law enforcement agencies in freezing some wallets related to Iran.
