Apollo Chief Economist: AI Proxy May Trigger Bank Runs
2026-09-29 00:47:29
According to CoinMeta, Apollo's chief economist, Torsten Slok, warns that AI agents could trigger a bank run by finding higher cash returns for users. He stated that agents can automatically transfer funds from checking accounts with an average interest rate of 0.1% to accounts offering 3.3% to 5.0%. With widespread adoption, this could deprive banks of the cheap deposits they rely on, putting pressure on the broader financial system. What's concerning is that agents can move funds in the same direction without any communication, and millions of people driven by the same incentives could act together. When everyone acts in their own best interest, the entire system could be affected.
