Binance Hackers Use Unprecedented Money Laundering Methods to Rapidly Circulate and Steal Funds

According to CoinMeta, Chainalysis reports that Binance hackers are using an unprecedented money-laundering method, with stolen funds rapidly circulating through thousands of transactions. The attackers did not move the funds along a simple path but repeatedly sent them between wallets, including back to previously used addresses. This speed and repetitive pattern indicate that the attackers employed automated methods intended to conceal the trail of the funds. Richard Teng from Binance states that the attackers used a "self-destruction mechanism" during the intrusion to destroy their tools and traces. Early findings from Elliptic show that almost no stolen funds reached mixers, bridges, or exchanges, making these unusual wallet movements particularly notable. They were also eager to exchange freezeable stablecoins for assets such as Ethereum and moved funds between addresses before being caught by blacklists. These efforts were only partially successful. While these tactics have made tracking and recovery more complicated, they have not made the stolen funds invisible.
