Steve Huffman, the CEO of Reddit, stated during yesterday's financial report conference call: "The AI model does not drive traffic, not for us and not for anyone else." In October, the average number of search recommendations for Reddit decreased by over 1 million per week. Affected by traffic concerns and weak prospects, the stock price of $RDDT plummeted by about 25% on Friday. For decades, websites created content, and search engines directed traffic to them, generating advertising revenue, subscriptions, and sales. However, AI has changed this exchange relationship – search engines can now summarize website information and answer follow-up questions without readers having to visit the source websites. A study in March 2025 found that when users used AI summaries, the proportion of clicks on traditional search results was 8%, compared to 15% when using AI summaries, a decrease of nearly 50%. Google also faces transformation challenges; its stock price fell 12.6% on Thursday due to slowing search growth and excessive AI expenditures. Although its search business is still growing, monetization has not kept up with these changes.
