xAI does not sign the EU transparency guidelines, while Grok API insists on adding text watermarks globally by default
2026-11-01 11:53:02
According to CoinMeta, xAI has updated its development documentation, announcing that starting from November 7th, invisible text watermarks will be added by default to the API outputs for versions 4.7, 4.6, 4.5, and 4.3 of Grok, as well as three versions 4.20 of Grok. These watermarks create identifiable statistical patterns in the generated text by making slight adjustments to the probability of word selection. Although xAI has not signed the EU's voluntary transparency guidelines, it still must comply with applicable legal obligations. Developers have the option to turn off these watermarks, but they need to confirm that they are exempt from relevant laws and bear the responsibility for marking and disclosing them themselves.
