PeckShield Data shows that in August 2026, there were a total of 50 major security incidents in the crypto industry, an increase of 67% compared to 30 in July. However, the total losses for that month were approximately 136.3 million US dollars, which is a decrease of 49.5% from the approximately 270 million US dollars in July.

This means that the frequency of attacks in the industry significantly increased in August, but the amount stolen in a single month did not continue to rise. In terms of monetary value, TectonicFi was the most significant case of the month, with losses amounting to approximately 74 million US dollars, accounting for more than half of the total losses for that month.

TectonicFi has the highest event participation rate.

PeckShield classified the TectonicFi incident as the fourth largest crypto theft case so far in 2026. The report mentioned that the attackers were not able to successfully transfer most of the assets; the affected funds remained within the original ecosystem for the most part, with only about 6 million US dollars being transferred across chains before the operations on Cronos were temporarily halted.

Subsequently, the attackers began to dispose of the available assets, which included transferring some of the funds to Bitcoin. Since most of the funds could not be transferred out in time, although the amount involved was significant, the on-chain freezing measures to some extent limited the further spread of losses.

Multiple projects suffered losses in a single month in succession.

  • Moonwell Lost approximately $8.7 million
  • Termlabs Lost approximately $8.5 million
  • Coinsbuy Lost approximately $7.9 million

In addition, TAC suffered a loss of approximately 7.5 million US dollars, Injective suffered a loss of about 4.8 million US dollars, and MANTRA suffered a loss of about 3.6 million US dollars. The losses of BounceBit, Cosmos Labs, and Aquifer were approximately 3 million US dollars, 2.87 million US dollars, and 2.47 million US dollars respectively.

The number of attacks has increased, but the total amount has decreased.

From the monthly data, a notable feature of August is that the number of major security incidents continued to increase, but the total amount of losses decreased compared to July. In other words, the reduction in the total amount stolen alone does not indicate that the industry's security situation has improved.

On the contrary, over 50 significant incidents reflect that the exposure of vulnerabilities and attempts at attacks are still spreading. For trading platforms, protocols, and wallet projects, the security pressure has not eased; the risks are more reflected in the frequency of these incidents, rather than just in the scale of individual losses.
