Zoox Expands Las Vegas' Robot Taxi Service to Airports, Intensifying Commercial Competition in Autonomous Driving.

Amazon's autonomous driving company, Zoox, is making Las Vegas a key city for accelerating commercialization. The company stated that passengers can book rides to and from Harry Reid International Airport starting from Thursday, marking the first time its robotic taxi service has covered one of the local's most important transportation hubs.

Airport pick-up and drop-off services are now officially available.

Zoox Previously, it offered test ride services to passengers in Las Vegas, but was unable to operate on a full-scale commercial basis for a long time. A turning point came in August of this year when U.S. federal safety regulators granted it a temporary exemption, allowing the company's customized robotic taxis to operate and charge under certain federal motor vehicle safety standards.

This exemption is valid for two years and allows a maximum of Zoox units to be deployed, covering 8 federal motor vehicle safety standards. Zoox vehicles do not have steering wheels or pedals, so their commercialization has always relied heavily on regulatory permits.

Accelerated expansion after regulatory approval

After obtaining the exemption, Zoox quickly launched its charging service and announced plans to test autonomous vehicles in San Diego and Houston, while also releasing a safety framework. The latest deployment in airport scenarios indicates that the company is moving its pilot operations towards more frequent and commercially valuable order sources.

For ride-hailing platforms, airports are usually one of the most important pick-up and drop-off points. Zoox indicates that their vehicles pick up and drop off passengers near the luggage collection areas of the two terminals at the airport. In contrast, while Uber and Lyft can drop off passengers by the side of the terminals, the pick-up points are usually located on the upper floors of nearby parking buildings, requiring passengers to walk for about 5 to 10 minutes.

The competition in Las Vegas is heating up.

Currently, Zoox is the only robot taxi company providing such services at Las Vegas Airport, but this advantage may not last long. Las Vegas has been an important testing city for autonomous driving companies in recent years, and commercial competition in the area is expected to intensify significantly over the next year.

Last month, Tesla, Uber, and Waymo also obtained permission from the Nevada Department of Transportation to operate commercial robot taxi services in Clark County, which includes Las Vegas. Uber plans to advance related business through cooperation with Hyundai Motor's subsidiary Motional as well as Zoox.

According to these permits, within the next 12 months, Clark County can deploy up to 8,000 robotic taxis. As airports, urban areas, and high-frequency travel routes are gradually opened up, the commercial competition in autonomous driving transportation will shift more directly towards capacity scale, connection efficiency, and safe operational capabilities.
