Cowboy Clean Fuels operates a biomass carbon removal and sequestration (BiCRS) pathway in the Powder River Basin of Wyoming. Agricultural processing residues are injected into depleted coalbed methane reservoirs, where native microorganisms decompose this biomass under anaerobic conditions to produce renewable natural gas, while carbon dioxide is permanently adsorbed on the surface of the coal seams. The amount of carbon removed is quantified using the company's patented BiCRS + RNG methodology, which is established in accordance with ISO 14064-2:2019, and the permanence of carbon sequestration exceeds 100 years.
The projects of Cowboy Clean Fuels are certified by Absolute Carbon Standard developed by Absolute Climate. The credit is issued by the registration system C-Capsule operated by Evident. Evident is a part of Xpansiv. After multiple stages of technical review, Climate Vault Solutions has conducted an independent assessment of that company's Triangle Unit project.
