A study conducted by researchers from Northeastern University in collaboration with Consumer Reports found that among 21 newer connected cars, 19 send traffic to at least one third-party entity, and among 30 accompanying apps, 7 provide sensitive data such as VIN, email addresses, phone numbers, and precise locations to companies involved in tracking and advertising. The study indicates that once the apps are paired with the vehicles, the exposure of consumers to advertising and tracking activities nearly doubles.
