Robinhood has completed its first company-level purchase of Bitcoin, adding BTC worth 25 million US dollars to its balance sheet, indicating that the company is further expanding its presence in the crypto market.
This purchase was disclosed by Robinhood, the person in charge of encryption business, during an interview with Digital Asset Summit Asia. Unlike the encrypted assets held for clients, the bitcoins purchased this time belong to Robinhood itself.
Robinhood calls this Bitcoin purchase the first step
Kerbrat indicates that the purpose of this purchase is to demonstrate Robinhood's commitment to Bitcoin and the broader crypto ecosystem, rather than to initiate a large-scale Bitcoin treasury strategy.
"Being able to contribute $25 million in Bitcoin is indeed a demonstration of how much we invest in this field," said Kerbrat.
He added that these bitcoins will continue to remain on the balance sheet of Robinhood. The company has not yet announced a specific target for bitcoins, nor is there any plan to buy them regularly.
This configuration of $25 million is not considered significant compared to the market value of Robinhood which is around $10 billion. However, this marks a shift for the company from providing only encrypted trading services to customers to also holding Bitcoin as part of its assets.
Bitcoin purchases drive the expansion of Robinhood's crypto business
This company-level purchase of Bitcoin occurred at a time when Robinhood continues to expand its cryptocurrency business.
The company is also advancing Robinhood Chain and preparing perpetual futures for eligible American users, all of which have been added to its existing range of crypto trading products.
Kerbrat indicates that the company may use its held Bitcoin for other purposes in the future, but no details or timeline have been provided.
At present, Robinhood has not disclosed exactly how many bitcoins they have purchased. Based on the reported allocation of $25 million and the Bitcoin price around the time of purchase, this holding is estimated to be about 294 BTC, but this is just an estimate and not data confirmed by Robinhood.
The Bitcoin actions of Robinhood differ from the treasury strategy.
This purchase is also different from those companies that have made accumulating Bitcoin a core part of their corporate treasury strategy.
Robinhood has not announced that Bitcoin will be an important part of its reserves, nor has it set a long-term accumulation target. On the contrary, the company describes this $25 million purchase as an initial step, while continuing to build a broader cryptocurrency business.
Therefore, this move has allowed Robinhood to directly obtain a corporate-level exposure to Bitcoin, but it does not mean that the company is shifting its balance sheet to a dedicated Bitcoin treasury model.
