Anduril Marketing Director Jeff Miller stated that this defense technology startup aims to become "the next great American symbol," and every marketing campaign must meet three criteria: simplicity, surprise, and elegant presentation. The company is currently recruiting through the "AI Grand Prix" drone competition, using it as a means to enhance its brand influence.

The defense technology industry generally prefers to participate in industry exhibitions and maintain a low-profile, rather than engaging in grand marketing campaigns. However, Anduril, a startup company, takes a different approach. The marketing director of this company told Business Insider that this startup "does not hide in the shadows."

Anduril was founded in 2017 by Palmer Luckey and four other individuals. The company's mission is to disrupt and accelerate the American arms manufacturing industry through its simple design and easy-to-produce autonomous weapons.

Anduril Chief Marketing Officer Jeff Miller said in an interview: "The founders are creating an environment where they hope that our marketing and creative work will be as bold as the way we handle contracts or think about product development."

He said he hopes this brand will become “the next great American icon.”

Miller indicates that each marketing campaign is based on three criteria:

  • Is it simple?
  • Is it surprising?
  • Is its form elegant?

He stated that marketing must be connected to the core of the company and carried out with a "clear sense of craftsmanship."

Anduril The current project “AI Grand Prix” embodies this strategy very well – it combines recruitment with marketing and carries it out on a global scale, while also bringing some additional fun along the way.

AI Grand Prix

Anduril didn't simply post a job advertisement for an engineering position; instead, they organized a " AI Grand Prix " – a drone racing competition that lasted for several months with a prize of $500,000. The winner also had the opportunity to secure a job at this defense technology company valued at $61 billion.

Miller indicates that a total of 3,282 teams from around the world have registered to participate, including teams from South Korea, the Netherlands, Kazakhstan, and China.

On AI Grand Prix, the last day of the qualifying rounds in September, Miller gave an interview to Business Insider. At the beginning of that day, there were still 15 teams left, but only 10 teams managed to advance to the finals to be held this December at the newly constructed 5 million square foot factory in Anduril in Ohio.

To qualify for the finals, competing teams must get their autonomous drones of the same model to pass through a series of gate frames within a timed race. The only variable is the software: teams are not allowed to modify the hardware, nor can they take over control after the flight circle begins.

Using this Grand Prix to fill just one position sounds like a lengthy recruitment process, but Miller says that this method is very effective and has a “very high hit rate” in terms of talent concentration.

He added that the company is able to see the skill performance of job seekers in real time. Anduril The event is also scheduled during the campus recruitment period, which means that whether students participate or not, they will enter the world of Anduril.

Miller said that Anduril will expand rapidly in the next two years, hiring thousands of engineers and manufacturing technicians.

In another recent recruitment campaign, Anduril also launched a reverse psychology promotional campaign with the slogan “Don’t come to work at Anduril.” The accompanying video advertisement mocked nap pods, distant management, and what is perceived as a lack of mission in modern technological jobs.

But it's more than just recruitment. Miller says that initiatives like drone competitions have a “huge halo effect” on the overall brand.

He said, "Events like this, or slogans like 'Don't come to work at Anduril' – they clearly define what Anduril is, and also help to create a broader awareness of it among the public."

Within the marketing team of Anduril

Anduril The majority of marketing efforts are carried out by an internal team consisting of about 12 people, who work closely with the company's design team.

Miller said that the management of Anduril understands the value of brand marketing and meets with him every week.

They realized that enabling a broader audience to understand the company's mission has long-term value. This not only helps to attract top talent but also contributes to building a “great, enduring, trustworthy brand that is understood by a wider audience.”

The idea for AI Grand Prix originally came from Luckey. Miller says that one day he was stopped in the company corridor by Luckey, who said, " Jeff, I want to create the world's leading drone racing competition."

“Okay, tell me more about it,” Miller recalled how he responded at that time.

Miller worked at PepsiCo, Snap, and the autonomous vehicle company Cruise before joining Anduril. He said transitioning from the consumer goods industry to the defense sector is a challenge.

This includes understanding what can be said publicly, learning the technical aspects of Anduril's work, as well as adapting to a faster pace. Miller mentioned that in his previous jobs, he could usually see the roadmap clearly several months, or at least a few weeks, in advance of an event; however, in Anduril, the situation changes on a daily basis.

How to tell stories for defense contractors, U.S. government departments and allies, as well as for investors and potential talents, is another challenge. Miller Two weeks before being interviewed by Business Insider, Anduril just announced plans to collaborate with the U.S. Navy to build a $6.6 billion shipyard.

He said, "For us, it is very important to ensure that the content does not focus solely on Anduril, but is always presented from the perspective of customers and frontline personnel. This requires us to take an extra step to make sure their views are included."

Although they "respect" traditional defense companies very much, Miller says that transparency is very important for Anduril. He stated that American taxpayers have a right to know where their money is going. "We will clearly explain why we are doing this."
