Fintel Connect released the study "2026 AI Search Guide for Financial Marketers : Appear . Compete . Get Chosen .", stating that the report is based on 2,400 AI responses and 7,809 sources cited, covering ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini, and involving four types of financial products: personal credit cards, business credit cards, personal loans, and high-yield savings accounts.
This report attempts to answer a question that financial marketers are increasingly facing: when consumers search for AI search tools to find out which financial products to choose, what determines whether their brand will appear in the results?
The report found that the visibility of answers generated by AI is not random, but is influenced by three measurable factors: the type of trigger words used in consumers' questions, the alliance marketing ecosystem surrounding the brand, and how owned content, alliance display spots, and user-generated content work together.
Fintel Connect, Senior Vice President of Business Strategy, stated: "Search is reshaping the way consumers discover and compare financial products, while most financial brands are still figuring out what this means for their strategies. This report provides marketers with data to help them stop guessing and start making decisions based on how search actually works."
The main findings of the report include:
- 90% of the prompt words in the decision-making phase lead to citations, whereas in the cognitive phase this figure is only 8.8%. Citations are a mechanism where AI searches for and mentions a specific brand within the answers; therefore, the citation rate can directly measure visibility at the most critical moments.
- The wording of the prompt words determines whether a search using AI will retrieve information from any source. Using prompts that emphasize urgency, timeliness, or “best” or “which” has an 87% chance of obtaining citations; whereas explanatory and advisory prompts only result in a citation rate of 8% to 17%.
- Alliance content dominated the financial product recommendations generated by AI. Over 54% of the recommended answers cited alliance pages, and the influence of the alliances reached its peak during the decision-making phase. The alliance parties that held a dominant position in different product categories also varied significantly.
- 50% of all replies containing AI do not cite any sources at all. For financial brands that are not clear about which prompts will trigger citation, no matter how well the content is optimized, there is no path to visibility.
