As the main contractor for the VA.gov modernization project, GovCIO has collaborated with CLEAR to provide veterans with more login options.

Fairfax, Virginia, October 7, 2026 / PRNewswire / -- The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs ( Department of Veterans Affairs, referred to as VA ) launched a new authentication pilot option on Wednesday to enable veterans to access their VA.gov accounts more conveniently. This pilot is one of the first steps in a larger modernization effort led by GovCIO aimed at improving the online experience for veterans.

GovCIO is a supplier that provides advanced technology solutions and services to the U.S. federal government. The company has collaborated with the security identity company CLEAR to integrate the security identity platform of CLEAR1 —– CLEAR –– into VA.gov. CLEAR has now become a new option for identity verification for veterans, their families, active-duty military personnel, and other users who log in to VA.gov.

The use of CLEAR for verification on VA.gov is entirely voluntary and is provided free of charge to veterans. Veterans do not need to switch; the current login options available through VA.gov are still usable. CLEAR merely provides veterans with another method to verify their identity and receive the benefits they are entitled to. For veterans who prefer offline support, do not have smartphones, or face difficulties with internet connectivity, they can register at 6 medical centers participating in the pilot program VA, using CLEAR Pods and with the assistance of CLEAR ambassadors.

GovCIO indicates that, as the main contractor, the company led the technical integration of CLEAR to integrate with VA.gov's login experience. The company also collaborated closely with the teams of CLEAR and VA to ensure that this new option could operate seamlessly alongside the existing login methods, while meeting the same security standards relied upon by veterans.

"Collaborating with CLEAR allows us to add a fast and secure login option that works in conjunction with the tools already in use by veterans. Each such improvement makes it easier for veterans to access the benefits they are entitled to."GovCIO Veterans and the President of the Corporate Technical Services Department Kristin Gill stated.

A simple and secure way to log in – available for those in need to choose from.

Veterans who select CLEAR only need to complete a brief setup to verify their identity and access their VA.gov account within seconds. Veterans can choose the most suitable method to get started: online, or by visiting one of the 6 VA facilities participating in the pilot program. Team members will be available to assist with the verification process on-site.

Using CLEAR for verification is free and voluntary. Veterans may continue to use other login methods if they wish; choosing not to register will not affect their ability to receive VA benefits or services. Veterans' personal health information will continue to be kept by VA; CLEAR will not receive or access this information during the verification process.

"Secure identity is the gateway to accessing medical services, and CLEAR is committed to ensuring that every veteran can pass through this gate smoothly."CLEAR1 Executive Vice President Brett Romanoff indicates that,We are honored to be able to provide services to veterans wherever they are, ensuring that they have an easy and convenient way to access the benefits they have earned and deserve.

Main benefits for veterans

  • Simple to set up and convenient to use.Veterans who select CLEAR can verify their identity online or in person – including receiving on-site assistance at 6 VA facilities participating in the pilot program, located in Washington D.C., Palo Alto, California; Atlanta, Georgia; Orlando, Florida; Brooklyn, New York; and San Juan, Puerto Rico.
  • Using the same identity in veterans' medical services. The same CLEAR identity set by veterans for VA.gov can also be used to log in to Medicare.gov, as well as multiple leading medical systems, institutions, and services – thereby reducing the number of accounts they need to manage within the healthcare system.
  • Free for veterans. The CLEAR account set up by veterans for VA.gov is free of charge. To use the CLEAR service in the airport security check channels, it is necessary to purchase a paid CLEAR + membership separately. CLEAR offers discounts on the CLEAR + membership for military personnel and government employees.
  • Optional to use.Whether to use CLEAR is decided by the veterans themselves. Other login options will continue to function as usual. Veterans who prefer to continue using the existing methods do not need to take any action. Choosing not to register will not affect the veterans' ability to receive VA benefits or services.
  • Built with protection at its core. All login options for VA.gov are designed to protect the personal information of veterans, while allowing them to have control over their own identities. CLEAR complies with the same security standards as other login options of VA.gov. CLEAR1 has obtained full-service certification from Kantara Initiative and meets the standards of NIST IAL2 / AAL2, and is suitable for its standard remote self-service registration process.

How to get started

CLEAR pilot has now been launched on VA.gov as an optional authentication method. Veterans who prefer their current login method do not need to take any action. Veterans who wish to learn more information or start using CLEAR can visit VA.gov.
