Atlanta, October 7th / PRNewswire / -- Every working woman has asked herself the same quiet question: Can women really make further progress here? Until now, the only answer was often to accept the job first and then spend several years to verify it. Today, the answer can be obtained in just about 30 seconds. By entering the name of almost any major American employer on a newly launched free public website, one can see its “Glass Ceiling Score (Glass Ceiling Score):” This is a simple indicator used to measure whether women progress to management and executive positions at that company at the same rate as men. This score is calculated based on the company’s actual employee data, not from recruitment brochures.

It can be understood as a "promoted version of Glassdoor." Before accepting a job offer, before requesting a raise or more responsibilities, and before believing claims on recruitment pages that "women are thriving here," women can first look at the data to see what it has to say—this includes both the companies that are attracting them and the companies they currently work for. Pew Research estimates that women's average income is about 15% lower than that of men, and this gap usually begins with who gets selected for management positions. Compensation has always been continuously measured; however, promotions have hardly ever been measured—at least not until now.

Two ratings based on numbers that companies cannot “alter”

By analyzing the number of employees in each employer group categorized by gender and position, the team developed two indicators:

  • Glass Ceiling Score Measures whether the speed at which women progress to senior management positions is the same as that of men.
  • Management Entry Score Measuring whether women are advancing at a similar pace into junior management positions – Research shows that this level is often the most prone to stagnation in one's career.

Anyone can query a company for free, view these two ratings at the same time, compare employers within the same industry, and conduct in-depth searches by metropolitan area and state. This tool ranks the major employers in each market and highlights the companies with the best performance.

Women Leaders Association 2026-2027 Volunteer Chairperson Lydia Price stated: "For 50 years, women have been told to work harder, to negotiate harder, and to find a mentor. What has always been lacking is not effort, but information. When women are able to compare the average performance of their employers in promoting women to that in promoting men, the entire frame of reference changes, and the discussion shifts from 'Believe us' to 'Show me the data.'" Companies that excel in promoting equal advancement of women to management levels also receive Top Women's Workplace awards at both the branch and national levels.

Who is this data serving?

Women who are entering the workplace or considering job opportunities can identify employers with a stronger track record of promotions. Current employees can use their company's data as a benchmark and bring this data into discussions about promotions and career development. Consumers and investors can direct their support to companies that practice greater fairness, and business leaders can also—often for the first time—see how their company's promotion patterns compare to those of their competitors.

Based on ten years of research in gender equality

Glass Ceiling Score is built on important and groundbreaking research from the past decade. The Economist has been influential. Glass Ceiling Index has brought this issue to the global agenda by ranking the working environment for women on an annual basis, although the rankings are done at the national level, not by employer. Bloomberg Gender - Equality Index helped set early standards for corporate transparency, tracking hundreds of publicly traded companies that voluntarily disclosed their own reports. Forbes has received widespread attention. Best Employers for Women The rankings survey employees of several hundred large companies each year, while The Times and Business in the Community Top 50 Employers for Gender honor British organizations that applied to participate in the selection process.

Glass Ceiling Score builds upon this by covering more companies, releasing ratings for individual companies rather than just a select few, providing detailed analysis at the location level, and relying on accurate employee statistics rather than surveys, voluntary disclosures, or application materials. Moreover, since each rating is calculated directly based on real employee data, without any influence from compensation, sponsorship, payment, or public relations, companies cannot manipulate the results – and no employer can choose not to be evaluated.

Price said, "Early indices did pioneering work, but each index could only cover the companies participating, or those on a shortlist. We measured everyone. If an employer promotes women fairly, the data will commend it; if not, the data will also show that clearly—and for the first time, women can see this before they even sign the employment letter."

Next step

The initial version covers most major employers in the United States, with plans to expand to Europe and Asia in the future. Future versions will also include more in-depth demographic analysis, including promotion fairness scores for women of color and other underrepresented groups. This project is funded by Women Leaders, and organizers expect that more women's foundations and advocates for equal pay will support this effort, with the goal of making the platform permanently free and accessible to women around the world.
