After transferring a large amount of Bitcoin, the U.S. government transferred out another $1 billion worth of seized Bitcoin.
Blockchain analysts have identified a wallet that is related to the U.S. government's efforts to recover funds from the Bitfinex hacking case.
Just a few hours after transferring a large amount of Bitcoin to a wallet with the identifier Coinbase Prime, the U.S. government completed another important transaction involving seized cryptocurrencies.
On Wednesday, on-chain data showed that a wallet related to the U.S. government’s seizure of crypto assets transferred over 12,267 bitcoins (BTC), valued at over $1 billion at the time of publication. Just a few hours before this transfer, the U.S. government made a similar transfer, transferring a total of $770 million worth of bitcoins to a wallet with the identifier Coinbase Prime.
Arkham Research indicates that the wallet from which these bitcoins were transferred is related to the funds recovered in the 2016 Bitfinex hacking case. In that incident, hackers stole a total of 119,756 bitcoins. The identity of the owner of the receiving address remains unknown at the time of this report.
Cointelegraph sought comments from the U.S. Marshals Service and the Department of Justice regarding these wallet transactions transferred from Coinbase Prime, but as of press time, no immediate response was received.
Estimates show that as of 2026, the U.S. government holds 328,372 bitcoins, which come from property seized in criminal cases and investigations. U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order in March 2025 to establish a strategic reserve of bitcoins and cryptocurrencies, but legislators are still attempting to formalize this order into law.
