Salesforce will purchase 500,000 high-integrity, data-backed methane emission reduction credits from Mitti Labs before 2030 to help small farmers in India enhance the resilience of their water resources.
San Francisco and Bangalore, India, October 28, 2026 / PRNewswire / -- DeepTech Company Mitti Labs announced today that it has reached a five-year carbon credit procurement agreement with Salesforce to expand the cultivation of climate-smart rice on tens of thousands of small farms in India. Just weeks after reaching a procurement agreement with Google, this new collaboration indicates that there is an increasing demand from companies for satellite-verified methane credit amounts from rice fields, which are considered a type of offset solution with immediate impact and scalability.
Climate-smart rice cultivation replaces traditional continuous irrigation with intermittent irrigation, which means allowing the fields to dry up briefly during safe periods of the growth cycle. This low-cost approach helps to reduce methane emissions while enabling the world to grow more rice with less water, as it inhibits the production of methane by microorganisms in oxygen-deprived soil. Intermittent irrigation can cut methane emissions by up to 50% and reduce water usage by up to 40%, without affecting yield.
Agriculture accounts for 40% of total human methane emissions. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change, with a heat-trapping capacity 85 times that of carbon dioxide, yet it remains in the atmosphere for only about ten years. This means that reducing each ton of methane emissions today can lead to rapid and tangible improvements in short-term warming.
The commitments of companies such as Salesforce are helping Mitti Labs to expand these practices. Mitti Labs plans to meet this demand: by 2028, it will issue 2 million credit lines annually from projects located in India and Southeast Asia.
The head of climate and energy, Salesforce, a doctor by profession, stated: "Salesforce is one of the founding members of Beyond Alliance and Superpollutant Action Initiative. We know that reducing super pollutants is one of the best ways to slow down recent warming, and we are committed to directing capital towards high-impact emission reduction actions. Reducing methane emissions from rice cultivation is a scalable climate solution that also helps to preserve water resources for future generations."
Each credit amount delivered in accordance with the agreement will be supported by field-level evidence and satellite-verified data on field drought conditions. The GeoAI platform, developed under the support of NASA, integrates high-resolution satellite radar with real data collected from the fields to track water accumulation, soil moisture, and crop health in individual small farmer plots. This enables buyers of credit amounts to obtain transparent and independently verifiable evidence of the impact, a scale that is unmatched by manual monitoring.
In addition to reducing methane emissions, this collaboration is expected to save 700 billion liters of water, which is approximately equivalent to the annual water supply for Bangalore over 18 months. This will help alleviate the pressure on groundwater extraction, as in these areas, there is competition between rice cultivation and urban and industrial water usage.
Mitti Labs Co-founder Xavier Laguarta stated: "Carbon credit buyers are increasingly concerned not only with the impact of a project but also with how they can witness these impacts firsthand." Salesforce By joining the ranks of Google to support methane reduction in paddy fields, it is evident that highly credible and data-verified agricultural credit amounts are becoming a core part of serious climate offset strategies. This initiative allows us to reach more farmers and promote practices that can reduce emissions, save water, and improve livelihoods."
With the support of Salesforce, Mitti Labs will deepen its cooperation with rice farmers' communities and expand the "digital twin" GeoAI dataset that supports the promotion of their projects. As the global demand for staple foods continues to grow and rainfall patterns become more unpredictable, the cooperation over the next five years will provide opportunities to strengthen food security and unleash the full potential of rice as a climate solution.
