Korean Bank Launches 24-Hour Won Settlement Network Pilot
2026-09-21 14:57:01
According to CoinMeta, the Bank of Korea has launched a trial operation of a 24-hour Korean won settlement network, with participating banks including KB National Bank of Korea, Woori Bank, Hana Bank, and Shinhan Bank. The network is scheduled to be fully operational in January 2027 and will be expanded to include other institutions and foreign banks as well. The network operates throughout the day, except on weekends and public holidays. Foreign investors can register foreign institutional accounts through Korean won services and settle Korean won transactions during business hours in their respective regions, without the need to directly open accounts with Korean financial institutions. In addition, the Bank of Korea participates in the Project Agor initiative led by the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) and completed a cross-border payment experiment in July using tokenized central bank reserves and commercial bank deposits. It is also advancing a blockchain-based Project Hangang system to settle tokenized commercial bank deposits using wholesale central bank digital currencies.
