According to CoinMeta, as reported by Decrypt, hardware manufacturer Futurebit is testing a new method of using simulated fruit fly brains to perform Bitcoin mining calculations on web pages. The experiment demonstrated the activity of 2,914 neural pathways. In the future, bit states that if this system can be extended to real organic neurons, its energy efficiency could reach about 1 watt per Terahash, which is 10 times more efficient than current best 3nm ASIC miners. This project showed that a mining system built with living neurons can perform one trillion calculations per second while consuming only about 1 watt of power. Although inspired by biological neurons, this experiment is still run on traditional computer hardware and lacks the hash rate and difficulty required to compete with Bitcoin miners. Futurebit also mentioned that another project called Flyminer uses a digital map of 139,255 fruit fly neurons to control standard Bitcoin mining programs.
