The U.S. Department of Justice seeks to seize $84.2 million in funds that, according to a civil forfeiture complaint, flowed through accounts used to process payments for Tether. The complaint was filed on July 15 in the Eastern District of California and targets Capstone Ltd in Montana, which operated as an unlicensed money transfer agent in at least six states. Kotaro Shimogori and Mary Jeanne Thompson, the owners of Capstone, are mentioned in the complaint, and a search warrant was executed at their residence in Sacramento. The company “denies any improper conduct.” Of the $84.2 million, $79.11 million comes from a Wells Fargo securities account under Capstone; another $2.06 million is in JPMorgan Chase, $1.86 million is in another Wells Fargo account, and over $1.1 million is spread across two wallets holding Tether stablecoins. EQIBank, the digital bank behind Capstone, has been warned that losing these funds could lead to its liquidation.
