On Tuesday, during the United Nations General Assembly in New York, U.S. Special Envoy for Middle East Affairs Brett McHale and Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner held a new round of indirect talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, with Qatarian officials participating and facilitating communication between the two sides. Zarif conveyed Iran's conditions for re-opening the Strait of Hormuz and resuming nuclear negotiations to McHale and Kushner. Iran proposed that if the United States lifts the naval blockade, cancels oil sales sanctions, and restores a comprehensive ceasefire in the region, Iran is willing to re-open the strait and resume nuclear talks within a week. Trump rejected Iran's proposal on Saturday, but Qatari mediators are still discussing compromise solutions with both parties, and it is expected that they will meet with Zarif and McHale separately as early as Monday.
