According to CoinMeta, Zhao Changpeng (the founder of Binance), the US law enforcement authorities successfully prevented a further decline in Bitcoin prices after the exchange Binance suffered a $6.3 billion hacker attack. It was confirmed that North Korea was involved in this attack, with billions of dollars flowing out of the exchange. This incident is considered the largest cryptocurrency theft in history and forced Binance to temporarily suspend withdrawals. On November 1st, CZ thanked FBI, the Secret Service, and the Internal Revenue Service for their rapid response, which prevented a more severe sell-off of Bitcoin. It was confirmed that approximately $3 billion in stolen cryptocurrencies had been frozen, but efforts to recover the remaining funds continue. On October 31st, it was confirmed that North Korea's TraderTraitor hacker group was responsible for this theft. The investigation revealed that the attackers mainly converted the stolen cryptocurrencies into Ethereum, possibly preparing to launder the money through decentralized financial platforms. An internal investigation by CZ uncovered multiple potential security vulnerabilities. Although withdrawals resumed, the total amount withdrawn by customers reached $3.64 billion, which is about 2.1% of the assets reported by CZ. The exchange stated that withdrawal activities are stabilizing, and a large number of deposits are still being made.
