According to CoinMeta, SpaceX announced an agreement with Qualcomm to build a nationwide 5G network under its Starlink mobile services division, with plans to deploy thousands of base stations in the United States by 2027, aiming to compete with major telecom operators such as Verizon, AT &T, and T-Mobile. According to a Qualcomm announcement on November 4th, the agreement covers cellular infrastructure at tens of thousands of sites in the U.S., although the specific financial terms have not been disclosed. Qualcomm will provide wireless unit platforms and processors that support large-scale MIMO systems, with the goal of improving network capacity and energy efficiency. SpaceX plans to combine ground-based 5G with satellite technology to extend coverage to areas with insufficient service. Starlink Executive Michael Nicolls stated that the goal is to reduce drop-out rates and establish a comprehensive nationwide network. This agreement could potentially make Starlink Mobile another nationwide wireless operator, despite traditional operators having advantages in infrastructure and customer relationships. Qualcomm describes this contract as its largest 5G agreement, and the value of the contract and expected annual revenue have not yet been disclosed by either party.
