AI Chip Acceleration: Why Do Data Centers Spend Billions Replacing Copper Cables?
2026-11-05 23:43:35
According to CoinMeta, as the performance of AI chips improves, data centers are spending billions of dollars to replace copper cables with fiber optic connections. Optical technology manufacturer Coherent reported quarterly revenue of $2.37 billion, a year-on-year increase of 50%. Modern AI clusters require thousands of GPU to work simultaneously, and fast data exchange is crucial. Traditional copper cables are effective over short distances, but at higher transmission speeds and longer connection distances, issues with signal loss and power consumption become increasingly prominent. Optical technology solves these limitations by converting electrical signals into optical signals. Data centers and communication departments that use Coherent account for about 82% of their quarterly revenue, indicating that the demand for high-speed network equipment is growing rapidly.
