According to CoinMeta, approximately 40% of the planned data center capacity in the United States is located in states that are considering suspending construction. Opposition to data centers across the country continues to rise, with related projects facing suspension orders or being halted one after another. The mid-term elections almost overnight changed the regulatory landscape in several regions of the United States, making it more unfavorable for the construction of artificial intelligence infrastructure. The newly elected governors of Ohio, Georgia, Michigan, New Mexico, and Texas promised during their campaigns to stop or at least suspend data center construction throughout their states. Additionally, the gubernatorial candidates in Alaska and Kansas who support the suspension of data center construction are currently in the lead, although the results of these elections have not yet been officially determined. Data from market intelligence company Cleanview shows that about 40% of the planned data center capacity in the United States is set to be established in the aforementioned states. Furthermore, statistics indicate that 46 local referendums have been passed or are expected to be passed, which will also hinder the development of data centers; at least 17 of these directly prohibit the construction of large data centers.
