According to CoinMeta, the South Korean stock market has tumbled significantly from its highs this year, with a cumulative market value loss of over $1.7 trillion, causing strong dissatisfaction among retail investors. This also puts to the test President Lee Jae-myung's policy of diverting residents' funds from real estate to the stock market. During his campaign, Lee Jae-myung promised to push the South Korean KOSPI index to 5000 points. Driven by the AI investment boom, the index once reached a record high of 9114.55 points, but then continued to decline. On Friday, the index plummeted by 8.8% during trading, falling below the 5000-point mark, with a cumulative decline of over 40% since its June high. Many retail investors said they responded to the government's call to abandon home purchases and switch to investing in stocks, only to now suffer huge losses. Meanwhile, housing prices in Seoul have been rising for 91 consecutive weeks. One investor stated that about 65% of the 40 million Korean won he invested in a small-cap stock index fund has been lost. The market reversal is intensifying investors' doubts about the government's policies.
