Bitcoin developers propose a "quantum mine" to counter quantum theft

According to CoinMeta, Bitcoin core developer Cory Fields has proposed a system called “Quantum Mines,” which aims to put attackers at risk of losing their own Bitcoins when attempting to steal funds from wallets that are vulnerable to quantum computer attacks. In a proposal on November 4th, Fields required that anyone transferring such vulnerable Bitcoins must provide a matching collateral from a quantum-safe wallet. This system would give the original owners the opportunity to retrieve their coins and claim the attacker’s collateral if they can provide proof of ownership. Fields stated that this concept is a response to future quantum computing threats, as there is currently no such mechanism in Bitcoin. The proposal addresses security issues related to Bitcoin wallets whose public keys have been exposed on the blockchain, allowing quantum computers to potentially derive private keys from these keys. Fields suggested that anyone spending these vulnerable coins must provide collateral equal to the amount transferred. Legitimate owners of the original coins could prepare a hidden commitment of ownership before quantum attacks become feasible.
