According to The Wall Street Journal, OpenAI has acquired smartphone camera company Glass Imaging for a transaction amount of over $300 million. OpenAI has not commented on this yet, but this deal once again strengthens market expectations for its expansion into AI hardware.

The core of the business lies in computational photography.

Glass Imaging was founded in 2019, with its headquarters located in Los Altos, California, USA. The company has raised a total of approximately 30 million US dollars in financing. Both founders of the company, Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop, have previously worked at Apple and were involved in teams related to the iPhone portrait mode.

The focus of Glass Imaging is not to use AI for post-processing after shooting, but to intervene in the imaging process before and after pressing the shutter. The approach involves using neural networks to learn the characteristics of different smartphone camera systems, including lenses, sensors, and multi-camera combinations, in order to produce clearer photos.

The acquisition complements the hardware layout.

This type of technology mainly addresses the issue of limited volume in mobile phone camera modules. Due to the limited space for the lens and sensors in mobile phones, it is difficult for the hardware itself to continue to improve zoom capabilities. Therefore, manufacturers are increasingly relying on algorithms and AI to enhance image quality.

There have been multiple reports in the market before that OpenAI is advancing its own hardware projects, which include smartphones, headphones, as well as AI companion devices. This acquisition of a company specializing in mobile imaging and neural network imaging is considered to be directly related to this layout.

Previously, larger hardware transactions have been facilitated.

OpenAI also promoted larger-scale hardware transactions in 2025. At that time, OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, along with former Apple designer Jony Ive, revealed that the two parties had been collaborating on developing a device startup company named io. Subsequently, OpenAI acquired Ive's company for $6.5 billion.

If the report is true, this transaction means that OpenAI is not only expanding at the model and application levels but also continuing to enhance its capabilities related to hardware and terminal experience, especially in basic technologies related to visual input and device imaging.
